What is The Art, Fashion & History of Perfumes?
Perfume has travelled through every great civilisation. Sacred smoke rising in the temples of ancient Egypt. The perfumed courts of Versailles. The bottle that changed fashion forever. And India’s own five-thousand-year tradition that predates almost everything the West takes credit for.
The Art, Fashion & History of Perfumes is a live online cultural series that tells this story across five sessions — each ninety minutes, each self-contained, each bringing a chapter of fragrance history to life.
Built on the Cinquème Sens Paris curriculum and woven through with India-specific history that is often left out of the story, this series is for anyone who has ever wondered what their fragrance has to do with thousands of years of human civilisation.
Scent & Civilisation
The first session travels from the temples of ancient Egypt to the birth of the fragrance industry in 19th century France — taking in Greece, Rome, the Islamic world, India’s own ancient perfumery tradition, the courts of Versailles, and the invention that made modern fragrance possible. Each civilisation, each chapter, brought to life with historical context and real aromatic ingredients in your hands.
Session 1 comes with a kit of six scents — historical aromas carefully reconstituted to give you a sense of what each era may have smelled like. They are not exact replicas of antiquity, but thoughtful interpretations that bring the story off the slide and into your senses.
Note: The scents in the kit are contemporary reconstitutions inspired by historical ingredients and traditions. They are designed to evoke the spirit of each era, not to be exact replicas.
