Perfumery

A perfumer is an expert in creating perfume compositions. Like an artist or a musician, a perfumer creates harmonious accords between fragrant raw materials to arrive at the final perfume. A perfumer knows a large variety of ingredients and their smells, whether alone or in combination.

Hence affectionately the perfumers are often referred to as a Nose or 'Le Nez' in French.

These terms refer to the strength of the fragrance, specifically, to how much high-grade alcohol or water is added to the fragrance oils. Perfume (known to be the most concentrated form you can buy) has 18-25% perfume oil dissolved in alcohol.

Any mixture with a lower proportion of oil to alcohol is an Eau (water).
Eau de Cologne – usually 3% or less perfume oil
Eau Fraiche – 3 -5% perfume oil
Eau de Toilette – 6-12% perfume oil
Eau de Parfums – 13-18% perfume oil
Perfume or Extrait – 18-25% perfume oil

Perfumes are supposed to be worn on the body, generally on the pulse points, e.g. inside of the wrists, back of the neck, behind the ears, etc. The warmth of the body makes the perfume blossom to the fullest.

Wearing perfumes on clothes will not give the warmth of the pulse points and hence the lingering effect that is generally desired is lessened.

Perfumes are worn on the body, generally on the pulse points, e.g. inside of the wrists, back of the neck, behind the ears, etc. The warmth of the body makes the perfume blossom to the fullest. Wearing perfumes on clothes will not mimic the heat of the pulse points, and hence the desired lingering effect is lessened.

The length of a perfume depends upon a lot of factors. Starting with which type of fragrance the wearer picks. The lesser the concentration, like Eau de Cologne and Eau Fraiche, are known to be light. Also, fresh and citrus scents are more tonic but are not considered long-lasting either.

A perfume with a high concentration of perfume oil will be the right choice. Also wear you apply your perfume makes a difference too. The pulse points are a better choice than spraying it on the clothes.

Our SCENTBOX™ is created specifically for this reason. We want you to try our perfumes in a manner that is comfortable for both you and your pocket! The SCENTBOX™ allows you to try any 3 fragrances x 2ml of your choice from our collection of perfumes. While in malls you would have been given a smelling strip, we strongly recommend that you apply one out of the three perfumes on your wrist, neck and inner elbow after a shower. Don't use any fragrant moisturizer as this could turn the smell. Keep observing the way the perfume turns from its tp notes to heart notes, to base notes - base notes is what lingers long after you have sprayed your perfume. Do this with the other perfumes you've chosen the next day. We recommend trying only one perfume at a time as this will help you understand the perfumes you like best. You can look at our Scented Ceramic Bands too as this is a great accessory that will help you keep your fragrance around you too.

Our perfumes are a blend of natural ingredients & aromatic chemicals, which are approved by the EU Legislature. It is safe and allergen-free. A 1% w/v addition of the aromatic chemical, Diethyl Phthalate, is mandatory by the Govt. of Maharashtra for de-naturing ethyl alcohol (ensuring it cannot be consumed). We would recommend that you try our SCENTBOX™ before purchasing a full-size bottle. This will allow you to do a patch test on your wrist.

No. All our perfumes are free of animal ingredients. Nor are they tested on any animals.

Often the same perfume will smell differently on different people when applied on the skin- this is due to each skin being different from the other. The perfume adapts best to your skin when used regularly and is termed as your 'signature scent'.

Our perfumes contain aromatic chemicals in them, which are approved by the EU Legislature. It is safe and allergen-free, however they can't be categorised under 'organic perfumes'. A 1% w/v addition of the aromatic chemical, Diethyl Phthalate, is mandatory by the Government of Maharashtra for de-naturing ethyl alcohol (ensuring it cannot be consumed).

The above terminologies are generally used only in India. Earlier it was prevalent in India for the local suppliers to use Methyl alcohol as a base in perfumes. Methyl alcohol being carcinogenic required the appellation 'hanky perfume' or 'apparel perfume' as a disclaimer.

These are slowly disappearing, and now mostly Ethyl alcohol is used in perfumes, which is pure grade alcohol.

Top Notes provide the first scent impression of a fragrance once applied to the skin. They are lighter, more volatile aromas that evaporate readily. Their scent lingers for between 5 to 30 minutes.

Middle Notes sometimes referred to as 'heart notes', make up the body of the blend. They may be evident from the start, but will usually take 10-30 minutes to develop on the skin thoroughly.

Base Notes are those with the highest molecular weight. They last the longest and are also important as fixatives, that is, they help slow down the evaporation rates of the lighter notes, giving the fragrance holding power. Typical base notes include oakmoss, patchouli, woods, musk and vanilla.

Some industry experts say that perfume should be replaced every year, but properly stored, perfumes should last much longer. Most fragrances will keep several years- some, many more years than that.

To store your perfume correctly, keep it away from heat and light. A dark closet or a covered box is best. Also, avoid direct exposure to air.

Essential oils are volatile, fragrant liquids extracted from plant leaves, bark, wood, stems, flowers, seeds, buds, roots, resins and petals, usually through steam distillation. In other words, they are raw materials that can be used to create perfumes. They are highly concentrated and apart from a few exceptions, should not be used directly on the skin, although they can be diluted in a carrier oil, such as jojoba, for such use.

Perfume oils are fragrance components, natural or synthetic, in an oily base rather than an alcohol base, and can be used directly on the skin.

Wait 30 or so minutes before testing each fragrance, this will allow each fragrance to dry down properly and will also allow your nose to clear from the previous fragrance.

Good places are inside the wrist, behind the ears, elbow area, the temples, shoulders, behind the knees, the back of the neck, the cleavage area, between the toes, ankles, and thighs.

Remember fragrances rise, so don't just apply the perfume on your face or behind your ears as the scent will slowly rise and disappear.

Keeping fragrances away from light and in cool places can preserve most fragrances long enough. When you smell your perfume, if you find any foul top note like vinegar, then it’s worn out. But if you get the same smell as before and even if it’s past the expiry date, it’s still fine to use.
